Arrest Records in Charles City County
The Charles City County Sheriff's Office is the chief local patrol and arrest agency. Virginia State Police enforce state and highway laws, while Virginia Conservation Police can make wildlife and boating cases. Charles City County has no incorporated city, municipal police department, or city booking facility. The time slot on the local district docket can even offer a clue: the court schedules local officers, state troopers, and game wardens in separate blocks on its first-and-third-Wednesday criminal calendar.
An arrest history is not one report. The officer's file describes the event and basis for arrest. Riverside Regional Jail records intake and custody. The magistrate records bail or commitment action. General District Court opens a misdemeanor case or felony preliminary-hearing record, and Circuit Court takes a felony after indictment. Qualifying arrests and later dispositions can also reach the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange.

Riverside Holds Charles City County Arrests
Charles City County does not run a stand-alone jail. Local detainees are housed through Riverside Regional Jail Authority, or RRJA, at 500 FOLAR Trail in North Prince George. That regional setup is the main reason a new Charles City booking can be missed. The county courthouse and the Virginia Department of Corrections are not the first custody sources for a person who has just been arrested.
Use the official Riverside Regional Jail entry and its inmate-lookup button for current regional custody.
The legacy locator may not render reliably, so its fields must not be guessed. RRJA says it provides incarceration and charge information. If the page does not answer the question, call (804) 524-6600 and ask for Records. RRJA does not give release dates to the general public; the incarcerated person must convey that information.
Charles City County Arrest Lookups
No single Charles City County arrest lookup covers the full trail. Start with the source most likely to hold the record now, then move outward. Use names, the approximate arrest date, location, agency, and a report or court number whenever known.
- Check RRJA's official inmate lookup for current regional custody. If it fails, call RRJA Records at (804) 524-6600.
- Call the Charles City County Sheriff at (804) 829-9265 to confirm the arresting agency and ask about a Sheriff-created arrest or incident report.
- Search the Charles City General District docket for a filed misdemeanor or felony preliminary-hearing case, then check Circuit Court if a felony advances.
- For a statewide Virginia record, use the Virginia State Police SP-167 route. It requires notarized signature, payment, printing, and mail to CARE.
- Send a focused VFOIA request to the correct custodian when routine channels do not supply the releasable record.
Virginia State Police cases use the VSP FOIA channel, not the county form. Crash reports use Virginia DMV's separate process. Riverside booking records also have a separate RRJA request route. A county request does not reach every agency simply because the arrest occurred in Charles City County.
Note: Name the event, date range, location, agency, and known number so staff can find an existing Charles City County arrest record efficiently.
Five Charles City County Arrest Trails
One Charles City County arrest can create five connected records. The agency trail begins with the deputy, trooper, or conservation officer. The custody trail begins at RRJA intake. A magistrate creates the first bail or commitment papers. A clerk opens the case docket when the charge is filed. Finally, qualifying arrest and disposition reports can reach the Central Criminal Records Exchange under Virginia's reporting law.
Record flow: Agency Report → RRJA Booking → Magistrate Papers → Court Docket → CCRE History
Timing differs at each point. A person may appear in regional jail custody before a court case is searchable. A district felony entry can appear before the related Circuit Court number. A final disposition may take time to reach a repository record. That is why careful work compares the source dates instead of assuming each system updates at once.
Arrest Records: What They Contain
The available fields depend on the source. An officer report can identify the incident, arrest basis, and alleged conduct. RRJA records incarceration and charges but does not promise every field associated with another jail vendor. A magistrate's paperwork shows the initial bail decision, while a clerk's docket links the arrest to the charge that prosecutors actually filed.
| Booking Identifier | Jail intake number when assigned; it differs from a court case number |
|---|---|
| Arrest/Booking Time | Documents when custody or intake occurred, if released |
| Arresting Agency | Identifies the Sheriff, State Police, conservation officer, or other source |
| Initial Charges | Allegations recorded at intake; later filed or amended charges may differ |
| Bond | Magistrate or court release terms when public and recorded |
| Booking Photograph | Adult intake photos are addressed by Virginia disclosure law, with a felony-investigation exception |
| Custody Status | Shows confinement, release, or transfer only when that source publishes it |
Other source records may include aliases, physical descriptors, the arrest place, officer, warrant or capias basis, statute, report number, fingerprints, magistrate conditions, holding facility, later court number, and transfer status. Protected or absent fields must not be filled with assumptions.
Separate Charles City County Arrest Requests
Ask the Sheriff for a Sheriff-created incident or arrest report. The county accepts VFOIA requests by email at CCCFOIArequests@charlescityva.us, by mail to Attn: FOIA Requests, 10900 Courthouse Road, P.O. Box 128, Charles City, VA 23030, and by fax or hand delivery. The official form allows mail, pickup, or email delivery. Virginia FOIA does not require the form or special words, but a precise written description can lower search cost.
The county may charge actual costs for access, search, duplication, and delivery. It can require a deposit if the estimate exceeds $200 and can require payment of an older unpaid bill. Ask for an advance estimate. A response generally comes within five working days, though an extra seven working days may be invoked when production is impracticable. The result can include records, a lawful withholding explanation, or notice that no responsive record was found.
RRJA is a separate public body. Send a jail-record request to Lt. C. Jones, Office of Professional Review, at foia@rrjva.org or 500 FOLAR Trail, North Prince George, VA 23860. Court files go to the district or circuit clerk instead of either FOIA office.
Recent Charles City County Bookings
Charles City County publishes no daily arrest log, booking blotter, Most Wanted page, or app-only arrest feed. There is also no official Sheriff arrest-search app. The truthful recent-booking route is the RRJA locator and its Records phone fallback. From there, confirm the arresting agency and search the district docket after the charge is filed.
A current-custody result is not a lifetime arrest history. People can leave a roster after release or transfer. A missing entry might reflect a lookup issue, a different custodian, a delay, or the end of custody. It does not prove that no arrest occurred. Likewise, the VADOC inmate and supervisee locator is meant for state custody and displayed supervision, not recent county bookings.
The VADOC screen is useful after a sentenced person enters state custody, but it should not replace Riverside's regional-jail channel.
Note: A missing Riverside result calls for the Records phone fallback, not an assumption that no Charles City County booking occurred.
Initial Charles City County Arrest Charges
Booking charges describe the allegations known at intake. Prosecutors may later file a different count, amend the statutory subsection, decline a charge, or proceed on only part of the arrest. General District Court handles the first filed misdemeanor case and the felony preliminary stage. If a felony moves forward, Circuit Court records the indictment and later result.
Match the booking event to the court case by name, arrest date, agency, and charge context. Then read the amended charge and final disposition for every count. “Nolle prosequi” means the prosecutor did not continue that charge at that time. “Dismissed” is not a conviction. “Certified” or “waived” in a district felony matter describes movement to the next stage, not guilt.
A person reviewing their own record should preserve the district and circuit case numbers. If a VSP repository report is wrong, VSP directs the person to the arresting agency that originated the disputed information. A certified court disposition can help document the correct outcome.
Charles City County Custody Notifications
Different notification systems cover different custody levels. Virginia VINE provides local and regional jail custody notices, making it the relevant option for Riverside custody. VADOC uses NAAVI for state prison custody. NAAVI does not report local jail status or probation and parole events.
Federal custody is another separate layer. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal inmates rather than Charles City County arrest bookings.
The federal locator belongs in the fallback chain only when the underlying matter is federal; ordinary county charges remain with RRJA and Virginia courts.
Use the system that matches the person's custody stage. Alerts can change after release or transfer, so confirm the current status with the holding agency when timing matters.
Arrest Records vs Conviction Records
A Charles City County arrest record and a conviction record are created for different acts. The Sheriff or another agency documents an arrest, and RRJA documents booking. A court judgment records guilt only after a plea or verdict. The CCRE can compile reported arrest cycles and dispositions, but it does not replace the clerk's case file.
| Arrest Record | Conviction Record |
|---|---|
| Created by the arresting agency and booking jail | Created by the court after plea or verdict |
| Shows that custody and intake occurred | Shows a judicial finding of guilt |
| Lives with the agency, RRJA, and reported state systems | Lives in the clerk's judgment and reported repository history |
| May end in release, no filed charge, dismissal, or acquittal | May lead to sentence, appeal, or lawful sealing |
The latest Charles City County court case file supplies the filed charge and disposition that a booking log cannot. Traditional Virginia expungement and newer sealing provisions are separate legal processes. A dismissal alone does not guarantee that every booking trace has left ordinary access.
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt; pair every Charles City County booking claim with the court's latest charge disposition.
